Serving Suggestions
Margaritas are perfect for parties and get-togethers. You can make a big batch in a pitcher and let guests serve themselves. Pair your margaritas with chips, salsa, guacamole – all the fixings. And don’t forget the tacos.
Margarita Variations
Once you’ve mastered the classic recipe, it’s time to have some fun. The margarita is ripe for riffing. A few of my favorite variations:
Skinny Margarita
For a lighter take, try a skinny margarita. Skip the orange liqueur and use light agave syrup to sweeten instead. I like to up the citrus with a splash of fresh orange juice too.
Frozen Margarita
When the weather heats up, throw everything in a blender with a few cups of ice. Instant slushy happiness. For an extra kick, add a few jalapeño slices before blending.
Spicy Margarita
Muddle a few slices of fresh jalapeño or serrano pepper in your shaker before adding the other ingredients. The heat plays off the sweet and sour notes beautifully. Rim the glass with a chili salt blend for even more fire.
Mezcal Margarita
Smoky mezcal is a great swap for tequila if you want something a bit more complex. The orange liqueur helps balance the smokiness. Garnish with a charred lime wheel for a dramatic presentation.
Tips for the Perfect Margarita
A few tips I’ve learned for margarita perfection:
Choosing the Right Tequila
A good tequila makes all the difference. Look for 100% agave tequila, either blanco or reposado. Some favorites for margaritas: Espolòn, Olmeca Altos, Milagro. Skip anything that says “gold” – it’s likely an artificial mix.
Salting the Rim
The salt is key for that classic margarita experience. I like to use kosher salt or even chunkier sea salt for more crunch. Pour some on a plate, rub a lime wedge around the rim of the glass, then dip.
Shaking Techniques
Shaking is essential for a frothy, well-integrated margarita. I use a big Boston shaker filled with plenty of ice. The key is to shake hard for a good 15 seconds, until the outside of the shaker frosts over. Your margarita should pour out silky and ice-cold.
Garnishing Your Margarita
A lime wedge is traditional, but have fun with your garnishes. Try different citrus wheels, fresh herbs, even edible flowers
"Flowers in wine" refers to a wine fault... More. For spicy margs, a round of sliced jalapeño looks great perched on the rim.
Margarita Pitcher Recipe
Margaritas are made for entertaining. Here’s how to whip up a whole pitcher:
Ingredients
- 2 cups silver tequila
- 1 cup fresh lime juice
- 3/4 cup orange liqueur
- 1/2 cup water or limeade
- 1/4 cup agave syrup or simple syrup
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher.
- Stir well and refrigerate until ready to serve.
- Pour into salt-rimmed glasses filled with ice.
- Garnish with plenty of lime wheels.
Serving a Crowd
One batch makes about 8 servings. You can easily double or triple the recipe for bigger bashes. Set out glasses, salt, ice, and garnishes so guests can help themselves. A big bowl of chips and guac alongside doesn’t hurt either.
History of the Margarita
The margarita’s origins are as hazy as your head might feel after downing a few. Dozens of people claim to have invented it, from Tijuana restaurant owners to Texas socialites.
What we do know is that the margarita started popping up in the 1930s and 40s. It was probably a variation on popular Prohibition-era cocktails like the Daisy (margarita means “daisy” in Spanish).
The first known published margarita recipe was in Esquire magazine in 1953. It called for tequila, lime juice, and triple sec. Sound familiar? While the exact proportions may vary, the basic margarita ingredients remain the same to this day.
So next time you raise a salt-rimmed glass, thank the cocktail gods for bestowing this simple but perfect concoction upon us. Salud.
