Whether you're a seasoned mixologist or new to infused liquor, this easy guide with step-by-step instructions will help you transform your holidays into a spice-infused flavor-filled extravaganza.

Crafting Your Holiday Spirit Infusions

Infusing spirits for the holidays opens up a world of flavor possibilities. The simple process yields impressive results.

Vodka is an excellent starting point for infusions. Its neutral flavor profile serves as the perfect base for a wide variety of infused spirits that can make some interesting blended infusions.

Choosing Your Infusion Ingredients

The world is your oyster regarding flavors for holiday spirit infusions.

Think cranberries and star anise for Christmas, or gingerbread with vodka, a reader favorite according to Chef Mimi. Don’t be afraid to experiment—fruits, spices, herbs, and vegetables can create exciting flavor combinations for a unique holiday cocktail.

The Infusion Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Select your ingredients: Choose fresh, high-quality ingredients. Wash and prepare them, chopping larger items for optimal infusion time.
2. Choose your spirit: Vodka is an excellent beginner's choice due to its neutral flavor. Other clear spirits like gin or white rum work beautifully. For a richer taste, try dark spirits like whiskey or dark rum.
3. Combine and infuse: In a clean, airtight glass jar (like a Mason jar), or a vodka bottle if you have nothing else, combine one cup of ingredients per liter of alcohol. Seal the jar tightly and store it in a dark place.
4. Wait: Patience is crucial for infusions. Most fruit and spice infusions take at least 3 days for a perfectly infused liquor. Delicate herb or floral infusions such as rose petal green tea require a shorter infusion time.
5. Shake daily: Shake the jar every day. This distributes the flavors and enhances the infusion process. If you’re using fresh fruit, you can also try shaking several times a day.
6. Strain and store: Once infused, strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer. For extra clarity, strain it a second time using a coffee filter or cheesecloth. Store the infused liquor in a clean glass jar at room temperature.
