How to Sip Tequila: A Guide to Savoring the Agave Spirit

ByJB | CIVC, CAWE Hours Last uncorked on

Want to impress your friends at your next get-together? Learning how to sip tequila might be the answer. Ditch the salt and lime for a refined experience that lets the true character of this agave spirit shine. Like fine wine, appreciating tequila is more than quick shots and harsh burns. We’ll discover how to properly drink tequila, appreciate its complex flavors and aromas, and perhaps even find a new favorite spirit.

Understanding Tequila

Before we drink tequila, let’s understand what’s in your glass. This is crucial information about how to sip tequila like an expert.

Types of Tequila

Tequila comes in different varieties based on their aging process, which significantly affects both flavor and color:

  • Blanco (Silver): Unaged and bottled immediately after distillation, this variety offers a pure agave flavor.
  • Reposado: Rested or aged in oak barrels for two to twelve months, reposado tequilas typically showcase a smoother profile with subtle wood influence.
  • Añejo: Meaning “aged,” these tequilas mature in oak for one to three years. Añejo tequilas develop richer flavors and a darker hue.
  • Extra Añejo: Aged for at least three years, often in former bourbon barrels, this is the top shelf of tequila. In addition to the agave, expect complex spice, caramel, and vanilla notes.

100% Agave vs. Mixtos

You’ll notice labels indicating “100% agave” or “mixto.” Opt for 100% agave tequilas, made entirely from the heart of the blue agave plant. This ensures higher quality and more authentic flavor.

Mixtos can contain added sugars and other spirits, potentially creating a less smooth drinking experience.

The Right Glassware Enhances How to Sip Tequila

The shape of the tasting glass significantly impacts the tasting experience and how aromas and flavors reach your senses, ultimately changing how you sip tequila.

  • Riedel Ouverture Tequila Glass: Endorsed by experts like Bertha Gonzalez Nieves, CEO and co-founder of Casa Dragones, the Riedel Ouverture is specially designed for professional tequila tastings.
  • Riedel Ouverture Tequila Flute: Recognized as the “official tequila glass” by Mexico’s Tequila Regulatory Counsel (CRT), this flute-style glass beautifully enhances aromas.
  • Glencairn Copita Glass: Though traditionally for whisky, the Glencairn Copita also works exceptionally well for tequila. Its tulip shape concentrates the aromas toward the nose.

A white wine glass is a decent alternative if you don’t have these specialized glasses. The important thing is that the glass tapers at the top. This allows the complex aromas to collect for you to savor. Avoid using shot glasses or tumblers for sipping tequila, as they don’t concentrate the delicate aromas.

The Art of Sipping Tequila

Finally, let’s answer how to sip tequila. Remember that you’re looking for flavor details, not a quick hit.

Temperature

Tequila is typically served neat at room temperature. However, you can slightly chill a blanco tequila to accentuate its crispness.

Avoid using ice directly, as it dilutes the flavor, masking the agave’s subtle notes. If you must, consider a large ice ball or specialized silicone ice molds.

Breathing Techniques

Like wine tastings, allowing your tequila to breathe enhances its aromatic profile. Pour a small amount into your chosen tequila-tasting glass and let it sit for a few minutes before tasting.

  1. Observe: Tilt your glass and appreciate the tequila’s color and clarity. Notice how the color changes as you swirl it.
  2. Smell: Bring the glass to your nose and gently inhale, noting the initial aromas. What do you perceive—cooked agave, citrus, floral hints, or something spicier?
  3. Small Sip: Take a small sip, allowing the tequila to coat your palate. Hold it briefly in your mouth before swallowing, noticing the flavors and finish. How long does the flavor linger, and what sensations does it leave behind?
  4. Savor the Experience: Avoid rushing. Take your time with each step to discover new details and enjoy the complexities.

Experiment and Explore How to Sip Tequila

As you begin this tequila journey, remember that taste is subjective. Just because someone enjoys a certain tequila doesn’t mean it will be your favorite. Experiment with various brands, ages, and expressions.

Consider keeping a tasting journal to note your observations and discover your favorite flavors. Above all else, when learning how to sip tequila, relax, have fun, and discover the remarkable depth of this spirit.

Conclusion

Now that you know how to sip tequila, put your newfound appreciation into practice. By considering the type of tequila, choosing appropriate glassware, and practicing proper sipping techniques, you’ll discover a world of flavor. Enjoy a tequila experience far from those bracing shots and discover the refined spirit tequila truly is.
