Champagne making, the allure of popping open a bottle of bubbly without the high price tag associated with "real Champagne" has led many wine enthusiasts to explore Champagne making kits. But with so many options on the market, choosing the best Champagne making kit can feel overwhelming. Fear not, fellow bubbly aficionado. We're here to guide you through the fizzy world of the best Champagne making kits and help you find the perfect one for your taste and level of winemaking experience.

Understanding Champagne and Its Imitators

First things first: true Champagne can *only* come from the Champagne region of France, made with specific grapes (mainly Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier) and using the traditional "Méthode Champenoise." However, many delicious sparkling wines made elsewhere share similar production methods and flavor profiles. They can even incorporate Sauvignon Blanc in their unique blends.

Champagne Making Kits: A Budget-Friendly Option

The best Champagne making kits let you enjoy that delightful bubbly experience at a fraction of the cost of Champagne bottles from a shop. These Champagne making kits generally fall into two categories:

  1. Kits with juice concentrate: These provide ease and convenience for beginners, offering pre-measured ingredients and simplified instructions.
  2. Kits with fresh juice: These require more hands-on involvement and offer greater control over the final product, appealing to more experienced winemakers.

Factors to Consider When Choosing the Best Champagne Making Kit

Picking the right Champagne making kit involves a bit of bubbly introspection. Here's a rundown to guide your decision:

1. Your Winemaking Experience

Are you a newbie to the world of winemaking? If so, a kit with juice concentrate will make your foray into fizzy fun smoother. They include pre-measured ingredients and straightforward directions. This type of sparkling wine kit will ensure a successful outcome.

More experienced winemakers might prefer a kit using fresh juice. It demands a bit more skill, offering greater control over the entire process. This way, you get to personalize the taste more and maybe show off your wine-making skills.

2. Desired Sweetness Level

Do you fancy a bone-dry Brut or a touch of sweetness like a Demi-Sec? Champagne making kits come in various sweetness levels to tantalize your taste buds. Figure out your preference before you start to make sure your homemade bubbly suits your palate.

Some kits even let you customize the sweetness level.

3. Included Equipment

Some kits offer the whole shebang – all the equipment needed for a successful batch. Others require a bit of shopping around for essential winemaking tools, like crown caps. Check what comes with your chosen kit to avoid any surprises.

Making sparkling wine is a bit like baking a cake – if the recipe doesn't mention you need an oven, you might run into trouble. Having to buy yeast nutrients separately can throw a wrench into your plans.

4. Wine Kit Reviews and Ratings

Don't just take our word for it. Winemaker Magazine decided 15 years ago to annually shine a spotlight on the Top 100 scoring wine kits. This ranking comes from blind tastings within their yearly, broader competition. This third-party list can be an incredibly valuable tool, showing how specific kits fared.

These rankings reveal kits that resonated with judges – a good indication they can yield a delicious sparkling wine. The 2022 list prominently features kits from renowned brands such as RJS Craft Winemaking, Vintner's Best Fruit Wine Base, and WineXpert, securing over 50 top spots. 5. Price

Champagne making kits come at various prices, much like the real deal. It's a good idea to establish a budget before getting caught up in fancy features or brands. Luckily, even more budget-friendly kits can produce excellent bubbly.

Remember, sometimes simplicity makes for the most delicious results. Consider it an investment in a fun experience and, hopefully, fantastic homemade sparkling wine.

Tips for Sparkling Success: Making the Most of Your Best Champagne Making Kit

Once you've chosen your champion Champagne-making kit, keep these tips in mind for bubbling triumph:

1. Sanitation is Key

Just like a pristine lab, clean your winemaking equipment thoroughly. It's super important as it prevents unwanted flavors from spoiling your batch. Consider it your bubbly bodyguard – guarding against off-putting tastes. Make sure to sanitize everything that will come into contact with your wine, including your glass fermentation jug.

2. Temperature Control

Yeast – the magical ingredient creating those beloved bubbles – can be temperamental. Maintaining the correct temperature during fermentation is vital. Think of it like Goldilocks and the three bears – too hot, too cold, or just right – yeast need things just so to work their magic.

Temperature control keeps your yeast happy and your bubbles lively. Using the right Champagne yeast is important, as well. You will want to aim for one that states it is a "sparkling wine yeast" on the packaging.

3. Patience is a Virtue

Transforming juice into bubbly bliss takes time. Allow the recommended period for fermentation and aging for optimal taste. Remember good things come to those who wait – it applies to winemaking as much as anything else.

Don't rush the process. You may be tempted to skip ahead, but allowing adequate time for secondary fermentation will result in a much better final product.

4. The Art of Riddling (Remuage)

The Méthode Champenoise usually involves "riddling" or "remuage". This is where you gradually turn the bottles to collect yeast sediment in the neck bottle for removal. However, not every kit uses this method.

But if yours does, embracing this step contributes to the classic Champagne experience. It is helpful to have wire cages for this step so that your bottles do not have pressure build up and explode.

5. Safety First

Sparkling wine, whether store-bought or from the best Champagne making kits, involves pressure. When it comes to riddling and disgorging, protecting your eyes is important. Invest in some safety glasses—they're far less expensive than a trip to the emergency room.

Safety measures are especially crucial. Learn the proper techniques and don't hesitate to ask for guidance from a local homebrew shop or experienced winemaker. Many people find it helpful to have a few key pieces of equipment on hand, including a racking cane, tubing, a tubing clamp, a screw-cap stopper, a jug hydrometer for checking the progress of your fermentation, and ice crystals to help with disgorging.
