For Fieri, owning a vineyard in Northern California’s Sonoma County goes beyond business; it’s about forging a connection with the land and crafting something remarkable. Winemaker Guy Davis
Behind every great wine is a skilled winemaker for Hunt & Ryde Winery, that expert is Guy Davis. In a collaboration that seems almost destined given their shared first name, Guy Fieri has partnered with Guy Davis of Davis Family Vineyards to craft the wines for his label. This partnership brings together Fieri’s passion for flavor and Davis’s extensive winemaking expertise, resulting in wines that are approachable and of high quality.
Guy Davis’s journey in the wine world is as fascinating as the wines he produces. After graduating from the University of Washington in 1984 with a degree in Management and Finance, Davis found his way into the wine industry through an unexpected route. In 1988, he began working on winery finance projects, but it wasn’t long before the allure of hands-on winemaking captured his interest. By 1989, Davis was getting his hands dirty at Sky Vineyards in Napa Valley, marking the beginning of his practical winemaking experience.
Determined to deepen his knowledge, Davis immersed himself in viticulture and enology. He took every available class at Santa Rosa Junior College and pursued additional courses at the prestigious University of California, Davis. This commitment to education, and his hands-on experience, laid the foundation for Davis’s winemaking philosophy. In 1994, he founded the Passport Wine Club, connecting wine enthusiasts with rare, small-production wines from across the United States. Davis produced his first commercial vintage the following year – 250 cases of old vine Zinfandel from the Russian River Valley. This milestone marked the beginning of a successful career that would eventually lead him to collaborate with Guy Fieri on the Hunt & Ryde label, which was later featured in the Press Democrat.
Winemaking Philosophy
Guy Davis’s winemaking philosophy is deeply rooted in his early experiences in the industry. His journey began at the young age
In wine terms, “age” refers to how long ... More of nineteen while working in a French restaurant in Seattle, where he was first exposed to fine wines. This early encounter sparked a passion that would shape his entire career. Davis draws inspiration from small-production, hands-on winemakers who approach their craft with the dedication and creativity of great artists. His winemaking experience encompasses every aspect of the process, from bottling and labeling to pruning and harvesting, emphasizing a truly artisanal approach.
This hands-on philosophy aligns perfectly with Guy Fieri’s approach to food, making their collaboration at Hunt & Ryde Winery a natural fit. Davis wishes to produce wines that stand on their own merits, without relying on celebrity endorsement or flashy marketing. This commitment to quality and authenticity is evident in the wines produced at Hunt & Ryde, where each bottle reflects the terroir of Sonoma County and the combined expertise and passion of both Guys. The result is a collection of wines that speak to the casual wine drinker and the discerning oenophile, bridging the gap between Fieri’s accessible culinary style and the more refined

The Tasting Room Controversy
As with many new ventures in established communities, Guy Fieri’s plans for Hunt & Ryde Winery didn’t unfold without a few bumps during the journey. One of the most significant challenges came when Fieri proposed renovating the three-bedroom home on the vineyard property to add a wine-tasting room. This seemingly straightforward plan quickly became a point of contention within the local community.
The controversy stemmed from concerns raised by many residents about the potential impact of a tasting room on their quiet, rural neighborhood. The biggest worry was that there would be increased noise levels and traffic along the narrow, two-lane road where Fieri hoped to open his tasting room. Residents feared that the tranquil character of their area, which many had chosen specifically for its peaceful ambiance, would be disrupted by the influx of wine enthusiasts and tourists drawn to the celebrity chef’s latest venture.
Safety was another significant factor in the opposition to the tasting room. The narrow road leading to the proposed site raised concerns about potential accidents, especially given the likelihood of increased traffic and possibly impaired drivers leaving wine tastings. These concerns culminated in a decisive moment when the Sonoma County Planning Board convened to consider Fieri’s proposal. In a unanimous decision, the board ultimately rejected the plans for the tasting room, siding with the residents’ objections about noise and traffic. This setback highlighted the delicate balance between developing new attractions in wine country and preserving the character of existing communities.
The Experience at Hunt & Ryde
Despite this setback with the tasting room plans, Hunt & Ryde Winery offers visitors a unique and intimate wine-tasting experience. Guests can sample a selection of wines produced on-site, gaining insight into the distinctive flavors that emerge from Sonoma County’s terroir. The personalized nature of these tastings allows visitors to learn about the winemaking process directly from the knowledgeable staff, creating a more engaging and educational experience than one might find at larger, more commercialized wineries.
Throughout the year, Hunt & Ryde Winery hosts special events that allow guests to immerse themselves in the unique atmosphere of the property. Guy Fieri has plans to host up to 14 events annually, some of which may accommodate more than 100 attendees. These gatherings promise to be lively affairs, though it’s worth noting that they won’t feature amplified music, in keeping with the peaceful nature of the surroundings. For families visiting the winery, there might even be educational activities for children centered around cooking, blending Fieri’s culinary background with the wine experience. The winery’s Italian-style piazza is complete with raised garden beds and mountain views, providing a picturesque backdrop for these events, offering visitors a taste of Tuscan charm in the heart of Sonoma County.
Raised Garden Beds and Commercial Kitchen
One of the standout features of Hunt & Ryde Winery is its beautifully designed raised garden beds. These gardens are more than just decorative; they play a crucial role in enhancing the overall atmosphere of the property, contributing to the piazza-like feel that Fieri envisioned for the winery. The gardens are meticulously maintained, providing a constant supply of fresh produce which is used and incorporated into the winery’s culinary offerings. Visitors have the unique opportunity to:
Explore these garden beds
Witness firsthand how the fresh ingredients are cultivated
Learn about their journey from soil to plate – or in this case, to accompany the wines.
Complementing the raised garden beds is a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, a feature that truly sets Hunt & Ryde apart from other wineries in the region. This kitchen is the heart of the winery’s gourmet events and wine pairings, allowing the creation of dishes that perfectly complement the wines that are produced on-site. The a commercial kitchen unlocks a wide range of food and wine experiences, from cozy chef’s table dinners to grand culinary events that highlight Fieri’s wines and his renowned flavor prowess in the kitchen. This unique combination of winemaking and culinary expertise creates a complete experience that appeals to wine enthusiasts and food lovers alike.
Guy Fieri: More Than a Celebrity Chef
While Guy Fieri is primarily known for his larger-than-life personality and his adventures across America’s diners, drive-ins, and dives, his venture into winemaking reveals a more layered side of the celebrity chef. Fieri's interest in wine was sparked early in his career by an unexpected encounter with a French wine cork salesman, igniting a passion that would eventually lead him to own a vineyard. His journey into the realm of wine is deeply personal, symbolizing not merely a business opportunity but a sincere affection for the craft.
Fieri's commitment to winemaking is evident in his choice of residence. He calls Santa Rosa, California home – an area renowned as the urban heart of wine country. This strategic location allows him and the Fieri family, including Ryder Fieri, to be deeply involved in the day-to-day operations of Hunt & Ryde Winery. Balancing his culinary career with winemaking is no small feat, Guy Fieri demonstrates his dedication by spending significant time at the vineyard and working closely with winemaker Guy Davis to produce high-quality wines under the Hunt & Ryde label. This hands-on approach showcases Fieri’s determination to be more than just a celebrity name on a wine bottle, but a genuine contributor to the winemaking process.
From Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives to Vineyards
Guy Fieri’s transition from the world of “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” to the refined realm of winemaking might seem like a leap, but his television fame has played a significant role in promoting his winemaking ventures. The visibility and credibility Guy Fieri has gained through his Food Network shows have helped bring attention to Hunt & Ryde Winery, attracting curious fans and wine enthusiasts alike. This crossover appeal has allowed Fieri to bridge the gap between casual dining and fine wine, introducing his loyal fanbase to the world of viticulture and potentially attracting a new audience to wine appreciation.
Yet, what particularly stands out about Fieri’s approach to his winery is his disciplined methods used for branding. Despite his larger-than-life TV persona Fieri has opted for a more subtle approach with his wines. The bottles from Hunt & Ryde feature minimal branding, with only a small ‘Guy’ stamp on the back. This decision reflects Fieri’s desire to let the wines speak for themselves, rather than relying on his celebrity status to drive sales. It’s a move that demonstrates Fieri’s respect for the craft of winemaking and his commitment to producing wines that can stand on their own merits in the competitive Sonoma County wine scene.
Community Impact and Sustainability
Hunt & Ryde Winery isn’t just about producing great wines; it’s also about being an integral part of the Sonoma community. Since its inception, the winery has become deeply woven into the fabric of the local wine industry and tourism sector. This integration is a natural extension of Guy Fieri’s long-standing connection to the area – he’s called Sonoma home for over two decades, and his commitment to the community is evident in his approach to winemaking. With the establishment of Hunt & Ryde Winery, Fieri has forged a fresh attraction for wine enthusiasts and bolstered the local economy and the region’s standing as a top-tier wine destination.
Sustainability is another key focus for Hunt & Ryde Winery. In line with the growing trend towards environmentally conscious practices in the wine industry, the winery has embraced organic farming methods for its vineyards. This commitment to sustainable viticulture not only produces higher-quality grapes but also helps preserve the natural beauty and ecological balance of Sonoma County. By adopting these practices, Hunt & Ryde is playing its part in ensuring that the region’s winemaking tradition can continue for future generations. This focus on sustainability also aligns with the values of many wine consumers today, who are increasingly seeking out products that are not only delicious but also responsibly produced.
