A Tale of Two Regions: Mesilla Valley AVA Texas and the Phylloxera Crisis
To understand the Mesilla Valley AVA Texas and its unlikely connection to the French wine industry, we need to rewind to the late 19th century. A tiny insect called Phylloxera, a pest native to North America, was wreaking havoc on European vineyards. Imagine an enemy so small it's almost invisible, yet powerful enough to topple vineyards - that's phylloxera for you. Grapevines were its go-to food source, and once it took hold, the crop was practically doomed.
As the Phylloxera plague spread, major river basins became vectors of destruction, striking at the very heart of famous wine-producing regions. In France, the heartland of wine production, the crisis was catastrophic. Entire vineyards were wiped out, pushing the industry to the brink of collapse.
Enter Texas viticulturist, Thomas Volney Munson, who worked with French researchers who were trying to battle the Phylloxera epidemic. He discovered that some American grapevines, especially in Texas, possessed a natural resistance to the pest. By grafting

A Texan Solution for France
Munson’s research, conducted partly in the Mesilla Valley AVA Texas, a region known for its temperature variations and location within a major river basin, led him to identify a particular grape variety—the American Vitis Berlandieri grape, native to Texas, as a perfect candidate.
This vine’s root system naturally adapted to limestone soils and offered a strong, resistant base upon which to graft the traditional European varieties. Across the Atlantic, a piece of European wine country drifted onto Texas Hill Country soil, forging an unbreakable bond between the two regions. What happened next was nothing short of phenomenal - our solution leaped to the forefront, distinguishing itself as the real MVP.
Millions of vines across France (and eventually the rest of Europe) were grafted onto American rootstock, including that of the Texas Vitis Berlandieri, saving the French wine industry from ruin. In the vineyards of America and Europe, a buzz surrounding this Texan innovation brought regions like Mesilla Valley to the forefront, recognizing their special charms.
