Why do cigars and whiskey go together so well? This classic pairing feels so natural that many enjoy it without a second thought. But there's a science behind why these two indulgences complement each other. It's not just tradition; it's about the interplay of flavor, aroma, and that satisfying feeling of indulgence. Why do cigars and whiskey go together? A Flavorful Guide will help you to make the most of this delightful experience.
Why Do Cigars and Whiskey Go Together? The Art of Flavor Pairing
Why do cigars and whiskey go together? One reason is their flavor profiles intertwine. Think of it like a dance on your palate. Cigars offer a spectrum of tastes – from earthy
Earthy wines are those that evoke aromas... More and spicy to sweet and nutty.
Whiskey, with its wide variety of expressions (bourbon, rye, scotch, etc.), provides its array of flavors, such as vanilla, caramel, oak, and spice. For example, a spicy rye whiskey can stand up to the boldness of a full-bodied Maduro cigar. Meanwhile, a sweeter bourbon might find balance with a milder Connecticut shade-wrapped cigar.
Pairing Strength and Body: A Balancing Act
Both cigars and whiskey possess varying strengths and bodies. Finding the right balance is key to cigar pairing. A common mistake is assuming "like goes with like."
In reality, contrasting strengths often create a more exciting experience. Pairing a full-bodied cigar with a delicate whiskey could lead to one overpowering the other. Similarly, two mild options might lack the complexity to make them truly shine.
Try experimenting with contrasting flavors. A bold cigar with notes of pepper and spice pairs well with a sweeter bourbon like Jim Beam Black, a 2017 gold medal winner at the New York International Spirits Competition. If you're enjoying a milder cigar, you could complement it with a spicy rye whiskey, such as Cutwater Spirits Devil's Share Bourbon, which earned a gold medal at the 2018 NYISC.
Examples of Winning Combinations
| Cigar Profile | Whiskey Pairing | Key Flavor Notes |

| Creamy and Smooth (e.g., Connecticut) | Irish Whiskey, Speyside Scotch | Honey, vanilla, citrus, floral notes, light spice |
